:banghead: ARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! - this thing is gonna make me go back to jeeps!!!

The GMC was running when I parked it (well, short of the tcase making lots of noise). So, I finally got the "new" tcase installed. I put the tcase shifter back in and adjusted it according to the book. I hooked everythign back up that I unhooked. Added necessary fluids as required, yada, yada, yada...

Afterwards, I tried to drive the dang GMC and it would NOT budge!! Won't go forward, backward...nuthin! It wont engage in any gear. I make sure the tcase was not in neutral and tried again...STILL Nuthin...it acts as if the tranny is out of gear - and for your info, I did absolutely NOTHING to the transmission - I didn't unhook anything from it.

What the heck have I missed? This has got to be something simple that I've overlooked...right?

Did you put in the coupler that goes into the transfercase adapter? I forgot that once. :?

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
good one... I haven't pulled that one yet, but I hope when I do, no one is around!
AW CRAP...Wait a minute - there is a coupler on these things? What does it look like? How's it supposed to fit on?

All I did was to pull the old Tcase off and put the new one back in - I unbolted the tcase from the adaptor and bolted the new one back in its place - now you say there is a coupler in there (?). There was nothing that "fell off" the old tcase when I pulled it out - does this thing just sit on the shaft? Do you suppose its still on the old tcase?

I'm really confused about this now - where can I get more info about this coupler and maybe some pics/diagrams of how its supposed to fit in there.

Thanks again for the help...
Your criticism is noted, jrz_dad. I'm waiting. Are all minute - there coupler on these things ? I don't have a good description programmed into me. I think there are a few exceptions. What happened?
My bad.

there is no coupler on the 203 setup. It is a female setup so its not that. :deal:

I asked a guy that know more about 203's than I do and here is what he said:

If he starts the truck and puts it in gear and it doesn't move, does it make nasty noises when he tries to put it back in park. The nasty noises would be the parking pawl trying to engage while the tranny is still spinning. This would let you know if the tranny is actually moving. If so you can look at the shift linkage on the 203 it can sometimes be a big pain in the ass. Try removing the linkage and shifting the transfer case by hand. If the linkage is not adjusted right the transfer case may not be going all the way into gear. Shifting it by hand from underneath will make sure it as all the way in gear. Try it and let me know what you find out.
Let us know how it goes.

WHEW!!....OK, I was having a cardiac moment there.... I was digging thru my service/unit repair manual to find that thing...and getting nervous when I could not see one on the diagram...LOL

As far as noise's goes - when I start it up and put it in gear, there is NO sound what so ever. I've even shifted the tcase thru all the ranges while the tranny was in all forward gears, neutral, and reverse just for the fun of it. It makes NO sound what so ever.

Anyway, I'll take your friends advice and unhook the linkage so I can move it by hand to make sure its engaging and then I'll go from there...I'll post more frantic messages later!!!

Thanks!!
Tranny got plenty of fluid in it? You didnt pull the tranny when you swapped the t-case did you?
Z - I checked the tranny fluid just to be sure - its full. I've not gotten under it yet to remove the tcase shifter linkage and shift it by hand but I wanted to pass along to the group something I noticed yesterday.

I started it up and put it in gear. Now with every automatic I've ever owned, you could always feel the tranny "engage" in the selected gear. The Jimmy is NOT doing that - I cannot feel it engage in any gear.

Any thoughts fellas?
Will you finish it up and put it in gear. Why now? You and your every automatic I've ever owned you could always feel the tranny engage in the selected gear. No I don't think there are any.
Did you take the transmission out of the truck at the same time or leave it in?
I left the tranny in the truck - all I removed was the tcase. I left the adapter on the tranny when I pulled it.
Can you feel a clicking sensation when you select a gear or it real smooth?

I can't feel anything when I shift it - trust me, I spent the better part of 15 minutes shifting and trying to feel or hear it shift. I even went thru all combinations of drive gears and tcase gearing.

I'll do the manual shift thing on the tcase this morning and see if its the shifter that is misaligned....(hope, hope, hope)

if it is real smooth, your external linkage may have become disconnected from the transmission, or inside the tranny, the little rod may have popped off of the piston groove that it rides on. I wish you were closer, I bet I could get ya rolling again in a jiffy... If you can feel it click when you shift, your T-case may be stuck in neutral.... check your tranny fluid too.... let us know...

lol... I got a dozen Krispy Kreme Donuts that says your transmission shift linkage is undone either outside the trannt, or inside it...
btw... call me at 208-745-0358 if ya need help over the phone..
I'll be home later this afternoon and tomorrow...
LOL....I can't believe you just offered a fat guy Krispy Kream donuts on a bet. Do you have any Idea how tempted we could be to lie our way to winning those donuts?....

But Honor prevails here - I'll crawl under and see where things lead...but how would I tell if its disconnected on the INSIDE (without tearing it down of course)....
