Lizard Gulch Excitement

Okay, finally got around to getting most of my pictures uploaded from yesterday.

Gineric and I had been talking about doing a small group run and when he found he needed to take some action shots of Eric Kyle's Taco I jumped in with both feet. We tossed some ideas around and then made a plan to hit Lizard Gulch followed by Saylor's Cap.

Tippy-Timmy (nickname explanation to follow,) also came along. You might remember he was the winner of the Big Boy Toy Expo for 2008. This was the first time he'd had his truck out on the rocks and this small group was a good way to introduce him to it.

Just a few of the images that I've uploaded. I put the link for the rest of them at the bottom.

The drop-in was an interesting experience in itself and we could have stopped there and it would had been enough. Eric V dropped in first followed by the Taco which were uneventful.

Tippy-Timmy, first time in the rocks, had some trouble getting a good line. Eventually he begins making his way down and with no weight in the back it got tippy really fast, but nothing uncommon really.

Let's just say it freaked him out a little.

His main issue was driving a stick, because it quickly became apparent that finesse with the clutch was not something he really had down yet. That, and he enjoyed his brakes a little too much going down when he needed to let off a little.

We had an interesting moment with his descent though and for a split second we all thought he was going over. In retrospect, I think God must have put his hand up on the truck because I think he was on one tire for a moment and miraculously he came down on all fours.

Needless to say, he was a little shaken after that.

The next few obstacles were uneventful. We all needed some spotting here and there and no other heart-pounding moments to speak of. We came to the end of the gulch and the Taco and Greg's TLC dropped down into the bottom at the last waterfall with no fanfare, and both emerged relatively easy.

Eventually though, Gineric was goaded into taking his LC down ... my Rover wasn't even an option as I would have left my rear bumper in the bottom (and my wife would have accused me of doing it on purpose for a new HD bumper).

Eric dropped down in just fine, but then on the way out a snap was heard. He gets the truck up onto level ground and we start investigating. Tires come off, drive flanges come off, driveshaft comes out ... we think it's the diff. We eat lunch and then head home, turning out at the mid-point since Eric was in two wheel drive. He needed to be strapped a few times, which we all figured, but then saved grace by climbing out of the gulch under its own power.

Needless to say it was a fun, educational day, albeit and expensive one for some.

I can't wait for the next one

For the rest of my pictures the link is below. I'm sure there are more out there just waiting to be posted up.

Re: Lizard Gulch Excitement

It was not good. Brakes are bad! I think that might be the most scared I've been on the trail. I mean I've been around a lot of rolls but this was just freaky.

I either have broken spider gears which would be good as it is $150 fix or the pinion slipped past the ring gear which will be about a $1200 fix. I'm going to tear into it on Sat. I have to get the project out of the garage so I can get the 100 in. This is my first mechanical failure in any of my Cruisers. I've dented, bashed, and broken stuff before but nothing mechanical. I knew that this was a weakness but failed to install the ARB in the front in time. Sitting on the shelf in the garage did me no good. The ARB carriers are stiffer than the factory ones and prevent this problem. ARGHH!

Man, it didn't look that bad from the back. This is the first time I saw the video (can't count the tiny camera screen) and it made my fingers tingle.

Re: Lizard Gulch Excitement

Nice XJ video. I still like the look of XJ's.

So I am sitting here thinking about it and I am thinking I am the only WWOR to have put their rig on the lid while wheeling. The XJ vid gave me a little nostalgia boost, I sure liked the way the Cherokee looked in this thread (before the roll): http://www.planet4x4.net/forums/show...=cherokee+roll
