HBRK is heading to the legendary Rubicon trail!
We are planning on heading down to the Con this June over the weekend of fathers day. Exact dates will be determined at our next meeting in May. Likely heading down wednesday or thursday (6-11 or 12), on the trail for 2 days and then head on home.
Now before this blows up and turns into a pissing contest........ we realize that this is during the annual Idaho 4x4 association run. This is in NO WAY a statement or show of lack of commitment towards the Idaho 4x4 association or WWOR who is hosting the event this year. Due to rules and regulations we are not allowed to participate in the event this year as we have purpose built vehicles that are not street legal. Of actual members I am the only one who ha a street legal (sort of) vehicle and has insurance/registration. This would make me the only member allowed to participate. Many of our members and guests have already requested the time off from work, (myself included) and were planning on heading to Mt. Home for the event but due to the rules we have decided to go out of town.
We do have local connections who will be meeting up with us, showing us around ect so it should be a good time. Anyone who is unable to participate in the Association run due to insurance issues is welcome to join us. If able I would request that you stay and participate in the association run as there has been a lot of work put into it. :thumb:

Make sure while you are there you run Barrett Lake Trail. It is harder and just as pretty. The rubicon is a total blast!

Shane directed me to it when we went last year. I would hit Fordyce too if I drive that far again.

Bring your snow shoes. I have several friends who live in that area and there is a ton of snow pack from this winter. Last year when I was there the weekend after there was still some snow pack in the shady areas and some nice flooded areas we had to drive through (on trail). I know the water was over 40" in some spots as I have some photos of the guy on 37s in front of me with his tires not showing it at all. Fortunately they have granite bottoms. And believe it or not there are freaking huge rattlesnakes up there. I thought they were joking because of the elevation you are at. Murdrak killed one probably 8 feet long. All the people traveling through that trail leave food, food=rodents, rodents=snakes.

Thanks for the heads up all! I will not be suprised if there is a lot of water running when we get there, especially with all of the snowpack everyone has gotten this year!

You might check and see if the trail is even open. I have been there around the first of July in the past and hit snow 8 to 10 feet deep. I think 92-93 the trail wasnt passable until sometime in July.
As for rattlesnakes, we used to hunt them in that area. We used to kill over a hundred snakes in one weekend. My family hunted them all over that country from the 1940s until it became against the law in early 90s. I understand they are getting bad again since nobody controls them anymore. I have never seen one 8 foot long but every year we would kill several 6 1/2 feet plus. Big timber rattlers and diamond backs. Usually dont find them over 7000 feet but they can go higher if its warm enough.
Have fun its beautiful country. If I can remember I will post some photos of that area from the first jeepers jamboree in the 50s.

Glad you guys like the photo. One of the jeeps in the group belongs to my grandfather. He was involved in developing the trail along with Mark Smith and a group called the Eldorado Jeepers, or something like that. He was a surveyer for Michigan/Cal lumber company and spent his entire life in that country. By the way my dad still has the Jeep my grandfather bought in 54.

Will be watching this closely. We are planning a trip up there for the weekend after this. I had wandered about the snow hopefully if will come off there fast once it starts to warm up. As far as the snakes go I think I might be spending the night in the bronco and I'll be making sure I don't have to stager off to far to find it at night.:(

I would advise you to not do the Rubicon the weekend after HBRK is going. That is the TLCA's Rubithon June 18-22nd. There will be over 250 Land Cruisers and Toyota Minis/4Runners there that weekend. They rented the whole Rubicon Springs Area for this event. It is the 20th anniversary run, it will be huge. I can tell you it will be like sitting in LA traffic if you try to run the trail that weekend. We got caught last year right above Old Sluice when someone broke and there were over 100 trucks stacked bumper to bumper from Old Sluice to Gas Can Rock.

Either the springs or Loon Lake are great. (or used to be ) :darn:

I'd second camping at Loon.
We saw a handful of rattlers in 4 days. 3 at Loon, and I bet a half dozen at the springs. One of them was dead and hanging from a tree after a Cruiserhead got a hold of it. It is the largest rattler I've ever seen. It must have gone 10 feet in length and it was a thick as my arm (granted I've got puny arms). However, this would not deter me from going again.

If you want to camp on the trail, I would camp near spider or Buck Island. Fathers Day is an awesome weekend to go to the con. I have spent many fathers day weekends there, I used to take my dad when I lived in Sacramento.
Loon is nice, cause you can take day trips in and out, but you dont get to see much of the trail like that. I would go camp near Spider Lake, and take a day trip to the springs going down the slabs on the way there, and coming back up Old Sluice on the way back.
Dont think there will be much water on the trail by then, as northern CA has already hit over 100* temps! Have fun guys, and Star give me a shout if you need any directions or pointers :D

I think the number is still up in the air. I had to back out due to finances, Shawn, Pat, Mikey and Josh for sure. I think Todd and Marisa are questionable as are Ray and Linda. (Todd is having to rebuild his Buggy after the last comp, not to mention that he blew out 5th gear in the Dodge on the way back...... again) Others I believe are up in the air due to gas cost and if they can get their rigs back up and running! Hopefully they will chime in here!

Well we decided to take my buddy who is getting married this sat up to one of our local trails called gate keeper for a one night camping/wheeling trip and our little trip turned into some body damage some rollovers and 5 rigs limping home sun morning. And in my case a disapointed wife!(I just spent 2 weeks putting all new panels and paint on my rig)

BTW- Todd is planning on making it down to the RUBI with some of the club members, however he is leaving the Shocker at home. (comp the next weekend) He will be bringing the Green Machine which, he has no problems with wailing on. (also has room to stack a cooler, clothes ect)
