What is the best place to find info/help on SBC V8's?

If your looking for basic facts: Mortec (http://www.mortec.com)

I dont know of another general site though. A good source might be a "how to rebuild the small bock chev" type of book formt he bookstore. I have several and they are filled with all kinds of useful info.

What are you up to? Going to build one?

Im putting a 305 in my S-10.

I have:

305 out of an 82 p/u
Smokes

305 out of an 85 p/u
Knocks severely

305 out of an 89 p/u
Oil was never changed, cylinder bores pretty tore up, good roll cam/top-end, TBI

Was hoping the smoking of the 82 305 was because of valve guides, and could use the whole top-end off of the 89 305, including TBI on the 82 block. Replace all gaskets, and use it.

That should be pretty easy to do. I dont see why not.

Thats kinda what I was figuring. I dont think the size of camshaft bearings ever changed, and I think the only other small block I couldnt interchange heads with would be a 400 small block, because I hear they have like 4 extra head bolts.

I dunno. I guess Ill just have to find out.

I don't think there would be any problems as long as everything is from a 305 Only thing changed on the 305 would be the rear main seal to a 1 peice same year as the other small blocks :rotfl: :rotfl:

All of the heads interchange. the 400 heads have some extra steam ports drille din them but that only matters if your putting them on a 400. You can use 400 heads on other small blocks with no problem. IIRC 305 heads are higher compression if you put them on a 350 but do not flow very well so its not really worth it.

Also the valves are smaller in a 305 head due to size restrictions. :Like Matt said they don't flow well rotfl:

I can't forsee any problems with doing what you want, either. The cam bearings should all be the same and all will be merry. However, keep in mind that in 1987, the heads went to a centerbolt pattern for the valve cover, replacing the perimeter bolt pattern used on the small block we all know and love since it's creation. You will need to swap heads as well if you're going to use the 89 intake. However, if you have all the parts and a place to do it, then hell, go for it! BTW, a friend of mine had a 1989 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI. I think it had somewhere in the neighborhood of 175-ish HP. I would look at getting a better cam or something for it. You could do either roller or hydraulic flat-tappet if you want.
