C6 Interchange & Rebuild Costs???

I'm posting this for my friend who has a 79 F-150, 4x4, 400M, he's been given crazy estimates from a couple shops to build his C6 ($1000-1200 if he pulls it $1500 if they pull it) It's a simple 3spd and I've had my 727 built a couple years ago for $800 and they pulled it. What's the going rate? Is it cheaper to buy a reman? From who?

Also, he says the small block and big block C6's are not interchangable so where does that leave the 351-400M?

I just had mine rebuild. They built it how I wanted it and when it was all said and done i had paid like $1500 for them to put it in and take it out. I love my rebuilt tranny... It runs great and Fobes has a 2 year waranty on all transmissions they do. If you are in the Boise area I highly recommend Fobes Automotive.
