Sandman

I think it stays newbie for like the first 50 posts and then it changes to something else like wheeler or something. I can set it to whatever and I'm open to suggestions. :deal:

how "clean" does it have to be?
for the first, i think it would be funny to call it FNG- for friggin new guy..lol..
how bout we sort of rank them by rigs?
like 1st would be 2X4 driver..
2nd would be SUV AWD
3rd would be 4X4 with lift
4th would be rockcrawler...
something like that?
or
1st.. Geo Tracker
2nd..Ford Bronco2
3rd..toyota IFS
4th..UNIMOG
lol..

I might have to do something like that. I dont think I'll use vehicles since all that is opinion but maybe:

Pavement Runner
Stock
Modified
Getting outragious
X-trem!

Or something along those lines. What do you think?

AJ
07-22-2003, 06:35 PM
lol... that works, I like that one..
where is your server based?

Sandman
07-22-2003, 06:40 PM
I use www.ipowerweb.com

They seem to be alright. they have 24 hour live tech support that you can talk to and do tape backups. You cant beat the price either. Thinking of setting up your own page?

AJ
07-22-2003, 07:05 PM
yeah... I am a dealer for a company that sells intake systems, and working out the kinks for a dealership for a guy in utah that makes air lockers and sells unimog axles..
thinkin bout making an online store.

Sandman
07-22-2003, 08:08 PM
You might want to give me a call on that one. This site used to be Gate City 4x4. I sold 4x4 parts out of my garage and had a full online store. I actually can still get everything at Jobber prices but I just dont try anymore. I ran the online store for 6 months with paid advertising on many of the popular 4x4 sites. I ended up with a ton of hits and sold a gas can and a set of seat covers. On the home front, I got tired of people wasting my time or saying that I was ripping them off when I could beat magazine prices. Or just plain disappearing when thier stuff showed up. It was work to set it all up and I never really made anything. I fix computers on the side now and I make a whole lot more money doing that. I still think about popping an add in the paper just to see if anybody will buy something. I still have my tax license and stuff. :deal:

AJ

I hear that... the only things I'm going to do are thiings where I can drop ship... I can't afford to have inventory at all.. so, this will be purely internet based for me.. I have the Fed tax #,but in order to get a couple of other things, I need to get the Idaho Resellers permit, which I think is B.S., cause I doubt i'll sell anything to anyone in Idaho..I was planning on most of my sales coming from ebay, maybe a few from the forum members of all the forums I have been joining..
what companies do you get jobber prices from?

AJ
07-22-2003, 08:18 PM
I'm gonna be a forum padder here...2 more posts after this one for 50

AJ
07-22-2003, 08:19 PM
one more

AJ
07-22-2003, 08:21 PM
ta-daaaaaa lmao!
I would like to get ahold of you sometime and talk about business... there is a niche still to make money, it just needs to be capitalized on..
like one thing... no one on ebay sells the ATV or other engine K&N air filters... the only ones are the auto ones... I tried to get K&N to let me be a dealer, but I have to have a real store and a warehouse before they will talk to me... I need to find a warehouser and see what I can come up with there..

I lied to get my dealerships. I went with Reliable and TransAmerica. TransAmerica is basically the wholesale side of 4-Wheel parts wholesalers. they didnt care about a store front. They just wanted the EIN number and the Tax# and away I went. I did have a few $2000+ months but the profits were thin enough that I could have made more money with my time at a McJob.

AJ
07-23-2003, 04:40 AM
lol... at least you are honest and blunt about it now!
got any of their product lists/catalogs left?

Sandman
07-23-2003, 05:32 AM
The only product catalog that I got was from Reliable and it wasnt complete. Basically you are are your own to figure out what you can sell. Its a real pain. I made a list of the makers that they had and then I would go to the individual websites to get the numbers I needed. You can also call them when you have an account and they will look up what they have and the price, but heres the clinch, You dont know the price untill you talk to them. When somebody called me looking for say a Nerf Bar. I had to call the rep, get a price, figure out my markup and then call the person back. If the person did not kow exactly what they wanted, It turned into a time wasting nightmare where in the end, you made maybe $20 or so.

AJ
07-23-2003, 05:45 AM
wow, what a pain in the ass... that kind of service wouldn't be worth it to me at all....

Sandman
07-23-2003, 06:23 AM
I had big dreams at one time.

I think I could have made it work if I had a store front and did it full time but I have a decent job and wasnt willing to do it. I was hoping to be able to do it on the side but it turned out to be too much of a pain. Oh well, I at least gave it a shot. Thats pretty much how this web site was born. When I gave it up, I changed the layout, kept the forums and changed the name. We'll see how this site grows.....

AJ
07-23-2003, 06:37 AM
hope it keeps growing... I like this place...

Sandman

Its real slow now and it seems to come in waves. You'll get a few people that post a ton and then dissapear. It might be a good year before there is any real steady activity. I do have a few more minor plans like a deeper status indicator on the main page and I need to tweak up hte ebay forum better. The tech pages and stuff need to be redone. I've just been busy with other stuff.

AJ
07-23-2003, 07:16 AM
that's cool... if you need any help with anything, I'd love to help you out....
I've built 9 puters now, for myself and family... how do you get business doing that? what prices do you usually charge?

Sandman
07-23-2003, 10:25 AM
Ussually just word of mouth. I charge about 1/2 the local stores do so. Some months I dont have anything and others can be busy. I dont push it or anything. I used to push it and it got out of control. You almost have to be an ass to do freelance support for people. People seem to think that once you touch thier PC you support it for free for the rest of your life. I get sick of it sometimes but it is easy money.

I do Computer work and Networking and Phone support for AMIS and I get a lot of side business that way.

AJ
07-23-2003, 10:55 AM
that works... Right now, i'm finishing up my 2 1/2 year associates degree at EITC in mechanics, and as soon as I'm done, I'm headed over to ISU for the CIS degree... sounds like your interests are right up my alley.. Hope I can get my rig up and rolling... one of them at least, so we can go bust up some trail..

Sandman
07-23-2003, 12:25 PM
I've got an Electronics degree from ISU and I am about halfway to a CIS degree. I've got three generals left and I've taken all the c++ I have too. I found a better place than ISU.

www.accis.edu

They accept accociate degree credits for the CIS course. Fully accredited and all. AMI is paying for mine and its cheaper than ISU.

How did you get three generals left Three is a lot. Do you take all the c++ he or she have too often? How did you feel when you found a better place than ISU ?

AJ
07-23-2003, 05:35 PM
who is AMI? do they do the FAFSA? I get a hair under 6k per semester now with my scholarship and loans and grants.. I'd have to get pretty close to that to switch..

Sandman
07-23-2003, 07:15 PM
AMI is where I work. Its the really big building on the East side of the freeway when you go south past Pocatello. Around 1200 people or so work there. They pay for thier employees to go to school.

Sounds you've got a fine deal now. :deal:

AJ
07-23-2003, 07:34 PM
cool deal... what do you do there? besides answer all my dumb questions there all day, lol...
what is the pay scale around here for a BA in CIS?

Sandman
07-23-2003, 08:19 PM
I work on the servers and do some networking and I also take care of the PBX. I touch everything sooner or later. I work in the IS area.

CIS people are engineering paygrade and I think they pull them outa college for around 45 to 50K or so. Not as good as some places but its cheap to live here.

AJ
07-23-2003, 08:23 PM
cheap yeah... not to mention the EXCELLENT countryside we have around here.... I'd like to get you up in Targhee forest up here where I live... some staggeringly beautiful country to take a leisurely drive through...
EDIT: makes up for the shitty winters, lol..
