So I was out trail riding through the desert the other day at lunch, looking for a place called Fraser Reservoir. I found it, it looked by satellite photo to be a cool place to wheel, but in actualitly it was nothing more than another rolling hill full of tumbleweeds and sagebrush. But on the way out there, I passed by Cinder Butte, and holy crap is that place a mess.
It was full of old tires, washing machines, furniture, trash, ovens, and whatever the hell else you could think of. It looked like a bomb had gone off there and blew a fully packed house apart. Now I know that us wheelers didn't put it there, but damn it, that isn't Mountain Home's newest dump site. I was thinking of making some phone calls to the local paper and see about getting some PR for the club. I would like for our next run to be a cleanup, and invite the public and other club's to join in. I can make some calls and try to get some dumpster use donated for trash, some bins from the salvage yard for scrap metal, etc. From the BLM land maps, it appears to be state land, but I would assume I could still talk to BLM about it.....
I want to know if anyone has a problem with setting up a date in April, like maybe Sunday, April 24???
We need to participate in keeping recreational areas open!

Chris, touch bases with John Toumi-he might be able to get you a dumpster truck for the day. If you don't know him-go through Dennis @ Karparts.

I am sure Rome has some places that need to be cleaned. Patrick, why don't you set that up for us. I will be the first one there to help.

Hey Chris are you going to the next State 4x4 meeting? If so try to get some more details/info by then and we'll try to broaden this event. I will talk to High Desert about this at our next meeting. I really like that area out there as well. Hate to see anything happen to it.

I won't be going to anymore of the board meetings, I am not part of the board, but that awesome if we could get participation from the association.
I will try to post some pics of the area, and get some details soon.

Jim Schmid is the guy you need to get a hold of with the BLM. If you organize a cleanup through them they can help with getting the trash away from the site. Also, while you are cleaning up there will be a sign up form and everyone who signs in is covered as a federal employee for workman's comp and liability. It is a good deal. You never know when an accident could happen. I have lots of trash bags that I could bring to the next meeting.
I'm not yet ready to get real involved in a club again right now. However, your group really interests me because it is in Mtn. Home. I got real tired of the drive to Boise. 8 years I drove there for meetings and runs. I'm going to try to make your next meeting to sort of check you guys out.
I drive the silver/grey Land Cruiser 80 series, much like Gregs. Most of you have probably seen it. Nothing to fancy but it gets the job done usually.

I have put some calls out this morning trying to get some info...but all I got was voice mail, probably because of the holiday weekend.
I have got calls into
Jon Benedict, Boise BLM
Jim Scmid, Marsing BLM
Willy, Shorty's Salvage
and have got contacts for John Toumi now.....
Will be hopefully contacting the Mountain Home News today.
I hope this is going to be a go, we will find out at the next meeting. Haven't had any opinion from club members yet other than Alicia and I!! I need people to post up who is willing to do it, so it's not just four of us out there.l

Chris, if this does not work out for you; let's get together sometime this summer and talk about the National Public Lands Day-BLM sponsored.
Usually in late Sept. We could get something going with them as clubs and help out in this area. They are highly sponsored for this event (Nationally) and work hard to make things happen. We will have to coordinate with BLM.
If you can make this one work, keep me posted and i will post on Treasure Valley Fourwheelers forum-no promises as most have to drive quite a ways-but will try.

Thanks for all your info....
Got some cool news today...I talked with the editor of the paper here, and he is all set to do a full article on the cleanup, inviting the public out to help, etc. He will also print an article with pictures after the cleanup to help support us. He was a really cool guy and told me he is a target shooter himself, and was disgusted by everyone leaving their junk out there. So now we definitely will have some good PR for the club, as well as any other clubs or businesses willing to help out!!!

Here's some directions to the Buttes:
From Mt Home;
Take state highway 67 (AKA Airbase Road ) west out of Mountain Home. Immediately after crossing the rail road tracks, turn right on the small blacktop road. The road will go straight for a while then go to the right. Just before veering right, there will be a gravel road that goes straight ahead. That road heads directly to the base of Cinder Buttes.
From Boise:
Take the first exit to Mountain Home. After exiting I80, turn right just past the Chevron station/Burger King. The road is called “Old Oregon Trail Highway. Go a mile or 2 (not sure on the distance) and take the first left over the RR tracks. That gravel road will meet up with the same Blacktop that comes in from the south. Or, once you get over the tracks, follow the road to the left then immediately cut to the right you could wheel your way through the ruts and go up and over the butte to drop down the south side.
See ya there

So it's official now, this is a club event!!
Got most of the logistics handled last night at the meeting.
Idaho Wrecker Sales will be donating gloves
THERE WILL BE A MEETING POINT AT THE CHEVRON/BUGER KING AT EXIT 90. FOR THOSE OF YOU COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN, IF YOU MEET THERE BY 9:45 AM, YOU WILL BE GUIDED TO THE SITE!
It is actually pretty easy to take the back way. Take exit 90, turn right at the Chevron, follow that road and take a left on Bypass road. It begins as a well maintained dirt road, then turns into pavement, follow it around to the road at the southside of the Butte, and Voila, you're there!
I will try to have some signs posted up for this where the turns are.

I got some great news today!!
Talked with the land managers today and got the blessing to go ahead with the clean up. The club will be getting a Letter of Authorization as well as a letter commending our efforts!
We will be serving some hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as the drinks and chips for FREE to everyone that comes out, or until it's all gone.
I am also setting up a door prize giveaway for those that attend. This will not be a raffle. At the end of the day, we will draw names from a jar from those who attended, and give away prizes courtesy of the donations from local businesses.
If you have something you would like to donate either to the clean up or for the door prizes, please get a hold of me!!!
Hope to see a great turn out !!

Is the cleanup still Sunday the 24th? Also when do you want the signs? How many? I'm just making generic Clean UP with arrows. Is that going to work? I have some junk wood I was going to use to make stakes for them. I for some reason was thinking it was Saturday.
I'm still really far behind getting ready for Moab. I'll make sure I get the signs to you and my grill if you still need it. I found out this afternoon that my pop up trailer won't pull behind my 80. So I'm going to try to SOA the trailer to make it closer in height. I don't think I'd be able to find a 14" drop hitch.
Let me know on the date. Do you want me to post the signs the night before? I suppose I could get up at the crack of dawn and post them that morning. Or do you just want them delivered?

Hey Eric, why don't you get with me on Saturday and give me the signs for Sunday's clean up. I would still like to use your grill if it's still ok, don't know if I'll need it, but I'd like to be overprepared. The sign idea sounds great!!
Also, check out what the boys at HBRK 4X4 donated!!!!

Well, where to start......
First off, a huge thanks to everyone that showed up to help, and everyone that donated to this pickup. The site looks soooooo good now that it's clean! Go ahead and give yourselves a pat on the back!!!
I had to some worries that the rain last weekend was going to drive people away, but we had an awesome show of people that helped. The rain seemed to stay away the whole time we were out there cleaning, even though the Airbase and the city were getting rained on, how cool is that! I think we had somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25 people show up, and everybody did great.
We started off the day with everybody going there own way. Some of us grabbed trash bags and started walking and picking up all the trash in the sagebrush. A few with trucks and trailers drove around and loaded all the large piles of trash and picked up the trash bags, then carted them to the dumpster. The rest went and scrounged up all the tires scattered across the desert and piled them by the dumpsters.
I was really impressed at how well we all worked together. In a matter of only 2 1/2 hours, we had managed to fill up both dumpsters completely full and managed to gather eight pickup loads of old tires. I got word from the trash company today, and we collected over 5,000 lbs of just trash!!!! Hopefully today I will get the word on how much metal we picked up.
After the majority of trash was picked up, we all took a break to have some lunch. There was plenty of good food -chips, cheeseburgers, sodas, waters, chips, and some donuts. We ate quite a bit of it, and gave away all the left overs. I started the giveaway after we all got our bellies full, and I think everyone got something they could use. A couple of kids showed up in a Ranger, helped out, and won the big prize of the strap kit. I think everybody was kinda bummed cause we thought they wouldn't know what it was or how to use it, but about 20 minutes later, they buried the truck in some lava rock. I went to help them out, and pulled it with the new strap and shackles, so that was kinda cool!
Then we went on to go get a junk car off the side of the hill. Rob winched it down to the road and I drug it around to the dumpster. At first we were just going to leave it next to the dumpster for pickup later, but then we got the bright idea to winch it up into the dumpster. It would have been easy if the the dumpster wasn't already 2/3 full!! So we winched and tugged, and finally got it loaded in!
I went out there again yesterday, and I am just in awe at how much better it looks, and how little time it took to collect that much junk!
Once again, a big THANKS to our sponsors for their support, without them, this wouldn't be happening!

I wish I could have made it out there. Hopefully the signs all stayed up and nobody got lost. I'm glad you made a big dent in one of the many desert dumps. It really irritates me that people do this. Really there is no reason with the way our dump structure is set up in Mountain Home for all the dumping on public grounds. We have access to dump privledges for basically free (well we do pay taxes). Hopefully when I get back from Moab I can get out on a run with you!
