View Full Version : Playing around with this idea

So I got bored in class today and started playing around on paint. I was wondering what it would look like to stretch the scouts wheelbase. I realize this would envolve a lot of work including re-skinning the quarters, re-locating the wheel wells and gas tank, and of course a suspension re-design. But I figure if I am gonna swap axles and springs someday, it would be cool to do! Let me know what you think. I figure it would stretch it about ten inches or so for a total of 110 inches. Anyways, here is a crude rendering. Before and after.

I like the after alot better. But I would be curious to see how much it actually moved.
It looks about twice as far from the door to the wheel well in the after photo. How far is it currently? (It just doesnt look like it moved 10")

Like I said it was just a crude drawing, just messing around. I will have to take some actual measurements when I get home to see what 10" would actually do. I will look into that and post up what I find! :thumb:

Just trying to help...I think it will look better, and work better after it is moved.
You know, when I first looked at it I did not catch the change. After looking at the after photo I think that is how International should have done it from the start.

Yeah that was why I had asked him for a before photo, I had to look close at the photoshop to tell something was moved.

I agree with you guys. After seeing the second pic and looking back at the front it makes the front look wierd almost like someone moved the axle forward. If you could do that in a nice clean manor and have it look stock that would be a great way for your scout to stand out and have it not be to obviouse what you have done.:thumb:

uhhhh.....why not just get a traveller???
:what:
Or just turn it into a traveller. Get some quarters from a junkyard and stretch your frame 18"
You would have to extend your top though. Im not a fan of the traveller top. Thats why I dont have one :rotfl:

Only thing stoping me from moving around my axles a bunch is the effect on my turn radius.. An i really like my turn radius longer wheel base will change that......just a piece of jerky to chew on!!!:thumb:

Totally agree. So I went home and took some measurements. It is right at 8" from the back of the door to the wheel opening. so in the pic I think it is around 8-10" of stretch. I have about 9" from the current rear shackle location to the end of my frame rails. I think that about 9" would be just right!

First of all, you hit my biggest concern right on the head. I have considered bobbing my scout mant times to correct the severe case of ghetto booty but dont really want to deal with modifying a top to work. I could retain the factory fit of the top. Second, I am shotting for about 109-110 inches of wheelbase. Not 118-120. If you look at the sheetmetal between the rear of the door and the wheel opening on the traveler, which I know you have, it is significantly more than what i am wanting. I still want this truck to be mainly a trail rig. Not really building it for crawling. I was just thinking of a way that I could get rid of the overhang without bobbing it. What it really boils down to is that I want to stretch the wheelbase just enough to reduce the overhang without sacrificing cargo space inside. Just playing around with the idea. :thumb:

What kind of yota are you building? My buddy has talked about stretching his 4runner wheelbase.

My 85 runner that Ive had for a few years, its an ongoing project.
I doubt I will do any wheel base changes this year, gonna beat on it this summer and see where it ends up.
I dont want to bob the body and lose cargo space (my 38 spare is there) but I want a better departure angle. Bad thing is my fuel tank is behind the rear axle with 63" leafs mounted at the end of the frame.
To go longer I basically have to link it, and relocate fuel tank.

Man that would be freakin sweet! More time and $ but i guess thats what this hobby is about! :darn: Do you have any pics of stretched runners? But you brought up my other point that I was thinking about. I really hate to sacrifice any cargo space by bobbing as well. Its nice having all that room! Thats really why I went from my bobbed yota to the scout! :rotfl:

Also, I should tell the truth and say that the hot rodder in me has never liked the way the scout wheel openings look. Not really pleasing to the eye! haha. Always kinda reminded me of one of the altered drag cars from back in the day!

I have seen some nice stretched Bronco's. they look awesome, but the write-ups show how much work is really involved. I think if you have the ambition, go for it!
